From W.A.P.S To B.A.P.S.

In a recent interview, Dir. Robert Townsend revealed “W.A.P.” rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B want first dibs on starring in a possible B.A.P.S. remake. The 1997 classic was directed by Townsend and originally starred by Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle-Reid.

During an interview with /Film, director and comedian Robert Townsend shared that Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B have expressed interest in starring in a possible B.A.P.S. remake. Fans can recall the two artists’ 2020  “W.A.P.” music video paid major homage to the 1997 classic film.

From the hairstyles and long stylish nails, the AMA-winning video’s aesthetic induced 90s nostalgia.

“Hey, We Want To Do A Remake”

After Townsend was asked how likely B.A.P.S. could receive a Criterion treatment, the award-winning director replied:

“I would love “B.A.P.S.” in there. It’s kind of interesting because some people love “B.A.P.S.” and then some people don’t like “B.A.P.S.,” and some people are mad because they go, “You gave Halle Berry gold teeth and blonde hair.” And I was like, ‘Yeah, I did!’ She still looked good! She looked great. I thought so, too.”

Unfortunately, if a sequel does come to fruition, actress Natalie Deselle-Reid, who played Micky, Halle Berry’s (Nisi) best friend, would not be featured. The late actress sadly passed away from colon cancer in 2020.

Townsend continued:

“There’s people that love, love, love the film and some people that didn’t get it. And those that love it —  like you love it and you get it — I’ve had people go, “Hey, we want to do a remake.” Everybody from Megan Thee Stallion to Cardi B is like, “Could we do…” I mean, it’s like, I don’t know.”

A Criterion treatment or collection refers to the enhancement of appreciation of the art of the film through publishing them on DVDs, Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, etc.

Who Would Be In The Little Mermaid Cast If It Were All People Of Color?

Speaking of film remakes and harsh criticism, fans are excited for the upcoming The Little Mermaid sequel despite the racist backlash. Since Halle Bailey will play Ariel, SOHH wondered what it would be like if the entire cast were people of color.
