MC Lyte, Biz Markie, Doug E. Fresh, and other rap legends will be featured in a documentary about the compilation album Top Shelf 1988. The documentary, celebrating Rostrum Records' 20th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, will tell the story of how the album started the rap label in 1988.

The August 1988 Riot

The Top Shelf 1988 documentary will include previously unseen interviews and recording footage showcasing the iconic album’s making. 

The documentary will also touch on the August 1988 riot in New York’s Tompkins Square Park, which affected Top Shelf’s Lower East Side studio. Stolen artists’ masters took years to locate, delaying the release of Top Shelf 1988

MC Lyte, Biz Markie, Doug E. Fresh & More

The trailer for the documentary features MC Lyte, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Melle Mel, Special Ed, Doug E. Fresh, and more, who were all part of the original Top Shelf 1988 album. The documentary will premiere on Rostrum Records’ YouTube channel on August 8, and the music will be released via Rostrum Records.

“Many Years In The Making”

Rostrum Records President Benjy Grinberg expressed his excitement about the album’s release and hopes it will inspire people to rediscover the incredible music from that era. 

“Top Shelf 1988 is many years in the making. I’m so honored that we’re  a part of this momentous album. Our hope with the release is that it will inspire people to rediscover all the amazing music from this era,” Grinberg said. 

“All Up In The Biz: The Life and Rhymes of Biz Markie.”

In related news, a documentary about the late rapper Biz Markie’s life and career titled, All Up In The Biz: The Life and Rhymes of Biz Markie is also in the works. This documentary aims to celebrate the late artist’s legacy and shed light on his contributions to the music industry. 

Ye Unveils Trailer For DONDA Documentary

Another documentary centered around Kanye West and the making of his 2021 album Donda has also been announced. However, an official release date has yet to be confirmed.
