Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne has addressed critics thinking his Young Money roster consists of some one-hit wonders due to unreleased albums from Shanell aka SNL, Gudda Gudda, Jae Millz, Lil Twist and more.
Wayne said despite featuring YM’s Cory Gunz on his “6 Foot, 7 Foot” Carter IV single, there are no plans to rush his music.
“I’m not gonna shove him in your face right now and make him a one-hit wonder,” Wayne said referring to Cory Gunz. “He’s nowhere near ready. He’s gonna do this the way artists should do it, the way Drake did it. I’m not gonna make a one-hit wonder. That’s not what I do.” (Lil Wayne Unplugged)
After signing a record deal with Young Money in 2010, Lil Twist recently spoke on his unreleased debut.
“I want the album to still be called Don’t Get It Twisted,” Twist says of the upcoming release. “It’s coming in 2011 for sure. I have a few collaborations with Wayne. I have a record with Drake that we are working on. I have Nicki [Minaj] and my friend Khalil from Def Jam. And I have Justin Bieber on the album as well. I’ve been using a lot of in-house producers like Infamous and new producers that are coming up in the game. I’m just glad that it’s finally happening.” (VIBE)
Earlier this year, Cory Gunz spoke on what lessons he has learned from being aligned with Weezy.
“All of his performances, whether it’s a video or a live performance, his energy is always the same: It’s always up,” Gunz said in an interview referring to Lil Wayne. “If there’s anything that I learned from him, it’s definitely to put your heart in it. Regardless if you’re writing a verse for somebody else’s album, write it like it’s for yours.” (MTV)
Other artists on Wayne’s roster include Mack Maine, Tyga, Shanell and New York’s Jae Millz, who joined in 2008.
Lil Wayne continues to expand his Young Money Entertainment imprint, this time by signing Harlem rapper Jae Millz. Lil Wayne announced the new signing during a show at a full house in Newark, NJ. Jae Millz later confirmed the deal when talking to Complex Magazine by saying “Yeah, we just drawing up the paperwork, but I’ve been rocking with [Lil Wayne] since the first week in 2008,” continuing with ” I’ve just been keeping stuff low, but Young Money is what it is, and I’m still Wanna Blow.” (Rap Basement)
