Young Money’s Chanel West Coast has stepped up to air out her issues with hip-hop publication XXL Magazine not having her featured in its annual Freshmen Class.
Chanel jumped onto an XXL Instagram post and unloaded her frustrations about not being taken seriously.
Chanel also spoke out on the situation and backlash shot her way on Twitter yesterday (June 12).
This year’s roundup includes a wide array of hip-hop stars including Detroit’s Dej Loaf and Atlanta rapper K Camp.
This year’s selection process was, as always, an especially tough one, but we’ll get to that later. Without further ado, the 10 MCs in the 2015 XXL Freshman Class are DeJ Loaf, Fetty Wap, GoldLink, K Camp, OG Maco, Raury, Shy Glizzy, Tink, Vince Staples and the winner of the fan-voted 10th Spot, Kidd Kidd. Last fall, Chanel West Coast spoke to SOHH about having an on-screen TV image hurt her music biz hustle.
“Before I was on TV, I feel like I got less people questioning me as a female rapper. Now I feel like having been on TV, people have started to question me as a rapper. I’m on TV shows where I’m happy and laughing the whole time and in my music, I’m a bit more intense and a bit more hard. People are like, ‘Hold up, it’s two different people.’ It’s not that it’s two different people, it’s just two different personalities. If I’m on a comedy show, I’m not going to be on “Ridiculousness” smoking a blunt and kicking it with my homies like I would at home. There’s two different sides of me. I think other than that, people kind of get it after they get to know me. Once people have hung out with me, it’s like, “Okay, I get it!” Until you know me or know more about my life, I think that’s the only thing holding me back.” (SOHH)
