Lil Wayne along with Missy Elliott and Dr. Dre on Feb. 2 were honored for their contributions to music at the Black Music Collective orchestrated by the Recording Academy. The event honored the past, present, and future of Black music at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. DJ Khaled introduced the Young Money Entertainment founder to the stage to collect his coveted award.
As the two embraced, Khaled can be heard saying “I love you, brother. I appreciate everything that you do for me and hip-hop.”
Wayne was given his time to thank those that stood by his side and emotionally told his story like it is.
“I don’t get honored,” the “Twist Made Me,” artist said bluntly.
“Where I’m from, New Orleans, you [are] not supposed to do this. I walked into my mama’s room and I was 14. She asked me for a kid because my dad was killed and her son had just blown up and went on his first tour.”
Wayne wasn’t the only artist given props that night. Chloe Bailey of Chloe x Halle performed to honor Missy.
OVO Boss Drake sent in a humorous video submission to honor Weezy receiving his award.
Snoop Dogg popped out with his own performances of “Nothing But a G Thang” and “Deep Cover,” Dr. Dre’s debut solo single shortly after N.W.A disbanded.

Hip-Hop Royalty Gets Honored During Grammy Weekend
Rappers Lil Wayne, Missy Elliott, and legendary producer Dr. Dre will be honored at the Black Music Collective on Feb. 2 at the Recording Academy Honors during Grammy week. The Black Music Collective, an advisory group that fights for Black representation in the music industry, will present three hip-hop icons with a Global Impact Award for their achievements and contributions throughout their music careers.
In addition, music executive Sylvia Rhone will also be honored with the award for being the chairwoman and CEO of Epic Records and having a career spanning more than four decades.
Thank You For Your Service
Lil Wayne, who just received his first platinum plaque for “Lollipop,” will be honored for his 20-year career and becoming one of the few hip-hop artists to sell over 100 million albums.
Virginia rapper Missy Elliot is also honored for her 25+ years in music. Since her 1997 debut album Supa Dupa Fly, she has won four Grammy awards. She also received an honorary doctorate from Norfolk State University.
Longtime producer Dr. Dre, who started with the Los Angeles group N.W.A., will be honored after more than 30 years in the music industry. He will also be recognized for founding the renowned label Aftermath Records, and his philanthropy.
All-Around Appreciation
In August 2022, Lil Wayne announced Tha Carter series would continue with the announcement of Tha Carter 6.
Missy Elliott was honored multiple times in her home state, Virginia, and even has a street named after her in her hometown of Portsmouth. In May 2022, Dr. Dre donated $10 million to a Compton high school, where they named a performing arts center after him.
