Lil Durk has announced the release date for his next album and he’s betting big on himself. The Chicago-born rapper confirmed that 7220 will be out February 22, ending a nearly year-long wait for fans and positioning himself for a face-off with fellow Chiraq rapper, Kanye West.
Lil Durk is putting his money on the odds that he can succeed against Ye, who announced last month that he will be releasing the much-anticipated DONDA sequel, DONDA 2 on February 22nd.
“My album drop same day as YE 2/22/22,” Lil Durk tweeted.
Lil Durk is apparently not scared to drop an album on the same day as Kanye West, cleverly using it as a promo tactic and showcasing his confidence in his work. Moreover, his fanbase is with him – the announcement on Instagram has racked up over 700,000 likes so far.
Durk’s big bet is not on long odds. Here are some reasons Dirk can rest easy that DONDA 2 will not be a concern on 2/22/22.
Kanye West is known for pushing back his release dates multiple times so there’s a high chance DONDA 2 won’t see the light of day on 2/22/22. DONDA was finally pushed out by the record label after Kanye tortured fans with three weeks’ worth of listening sessions. All of Kanye’s previous albums were significantly delayed.
With Kanye embroiled in his divorce drama with Kim Kardashian, the enigmatic artist is not focused on his rollout, distracted from engaging with fans and the media about the music. All of his recent social posts and interviews have been about Kim Kardashian and their divorce, not DONDA 2.
Future is apparently producing the album but hasn’t said a peep about it in over a month. In December, he commented about his clout with Kanye but has offered no drips, fire emojis, or word about DONDA 2.
Kanye and Durk have worked together before, so there is no bad blood. And whether or not Ye drops on the same day as Durk, it will be a great day for Chicago rap.
Meanwhile, Kanye West has been busy in the studio with Fivio Foreign, Big Sean, and Benny The Butcher, getting tracks ready for DONDA 2. But after suffering through false starts and stops on the original, fans say they will believe it when they see it.
Kanye took to Instagram to make the album announcement. The caption read, “DONDA 2 Coming 2/22/22 Executive Produced by Future.” The cover art features a burning church and the drop date, 2/2/22, with a gray cloudy background.
