Former boxing champion Laila Ali has stepped forward to clear the air on recent controversial remarks she made about baby names, specifically, Kanye West and girlfriend Kim Kardashian's North West.
While Ali took the blame for using a poor choice of words, she denied trying to take a direct shot at KimYe.
“Okay, I was recently at a charity event and I was asked my opinion on some of these non-traditional and creative names and I was speaking very candidly and honestly as I always do. And you know, as a parent, knowing how cruel the world is and the bullying, and you know, kids have to grow up and get a job one day, I did say that I think some of these name choices are stupid. I do realize that it was a poor choice of words, you know, it wasn’t to single out Kim or Kanye. I actually mentioned a bunch of names, not just the name North. It was a general opinion to a question that I was asked, but it doesn’t matter. I do realize and I take responsibility for it. I have no problem doing that. It was a poor choice of words that I used. … You know I actually reached out to Kim and Kanye to apologize.” (Egypt Said So)
Footage of Ali speaking out on KimYe’s baby name surfaced online a few days ago.
“A lot of people do things because it’s a fad and they want to get some attention.. but this is your child…if it’s crazy but cool and nice and it makes sense, that’s one thing, but North and South and Leaf and Water Drop? West Coast rapper Game recently fully stood behind KimYe’s decision to name their first child together North West and compared it to his and Jay Z‘s daughter’s unique names.
“North West, one time for North West. Kanye, I’m gonna get you a cigar, man. I’m gonna stuff it with a little California if you know what I mean,” Game said in an interview. “Fatherhood is beautiful, enjoy it man. A baby girl is nothing but a blessing. I had two boys and when I had my baby girl, it rechanged my life for a third time. The best of luck with North West and that’s a dope a** f*cking name. I did the best I could with Cali Dream. I think it’s right up there with North West. Ivy Blue. Is it Ivy Blue or Blue Ivy? Blue Ivy. … Keep getting creative with these kids names. Earlier this summer, G.O.O.D Music’s Big Sean revealed a personal conversation he had with Kanye about falling in love and talked about his daughter’s name.
“No, but I’ve talked to Ye about North. I’ve not yet met North,” Sean revealed in an interview. “I heard it was a little baby, too. People trying to talk sh*t about that name. I feel like if I met a pretty girl and came up to me like, ‘Hi, my name is North.’ I’d be like, ‘Oh sh*t.’ We’ve talked briefly and what I’ve said to him is, ‘I remember when you and Kim were just flirting and sh*t and now you got a baby together and in love.’ That’s really tight to sit back and think about.
