Rap veteran KRS-One recently shared his thoughts on the controversy Young Money’s Drake sparked last summer for allegedly being exposed over using ghostwriters.

In a new interview with fellow hip-hop vet N.O.R.E., KRS explained his disinterest in slamming Drizzy for hiring writers.

“That doesn’t disturb me at all,” KRS told rapper/host N.O.R.E. “It diminishes him in front of those that write their own lyrics, OK, now those of us that spit the raw from our own heart, you really got to step up and come up to the plate on that level. But we’re talking about emceeing as a whole art, talk about rap as a whole art. No. If you got a dope writer who can make you sound like something, go ahead and get [them].” (Drink Champs)

A few months ago, Chicago rap veteran Twista admitted he had previously used a ghostwriter.

“Yeah,” he admits. “Not nothing where I’m trying to prove to you that Twista is the dopest artist or I got the best lyrics.” The creator of the Livin Legend EP adds he only used a ghostwriter on about three songs. In addition, Twista warns he still has the lyrical ability to take on anyone that may want to challenge him. (AHH)

Back in the fall, rap star Rick Ross admitted he had ghostwritten for other musicians.

“Someone who may have another vision or just ideas that are priceless versus someone who’s like, ’I’m basing my entire career off the words I’m finna tell you right now over this 30-second period.” I’m not speaking to anybody in particular, but let’s say for instance if you was DMX and had a ghostwriter, it’d maybe change the [perception] versus if you was will.i.am. I think that’s more about the music, the records.” (TIME)

Last year, New York rap veteran Sauce Money recently shared his thoughts on ghostwriting amid the Drake drama.

“I think back in the days it would have been [a knock to have a ghostwriter.] I think back in the days emcees had more responsibilities to write they own sh*t – it’s not important right now. … Me, personally, you couldn’t really call yourself an emcee. Take for example with [music mogul Diddy]. Puff doesn’t call himself an emcee…I don’t think n*ggas was penning [Drake’s] bars like that. I think where we get it confused is we got people in the studio around that’s talented just like we are. So, we feed off of each other. So, a n*gga might come up with a hook. A n*gga might finish a line for you. We’ve all done it. So, I think Drake is one of the best emcees in the game. … At the end of the day, you can’t discredit good music. Whether they write they sh*t or not, it’s good music. Me personally, I don’t have a problem.” (Doggie Diamonds)
