Louisiana rapper Kevin Gates is pulling for the best with Kodak Black. The hip-hop veteran has shared some words of encouragement for the fellow Southern musician following his publicized prison sentencing.
This week, Gates hopped on Instagram to encourage Black to make the best out of his bid by becoming better and wiser behind bars.
On Wednesday, a Miami federal judge sentenced the 22-year-old to 46 months in prison.
The state had asked for 46 to 57 months, while Black’s lawyers had urged for 37 to 44 months or less, court records show. Black, 22, had pleaded guilty in August to lying on a background form when he purchased handguns at a Hialeah weapons store in January, and again in March when he attempted to buy more guns. He also ran into trouble during his stint behind bars while awaiting sentencing. During the court hearing, prosecutors revealed that Black had beat up a prison guard. (Miami Herald)
Shortly after the sentence, Kodak had an uplifting message posted to his Instagram page.
According to reports, Black faced the possibility of landing a 10-year sentence.
He faces a maximum statutory sentence of 10 years in prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. Prosecutors in May charged the 23-year-old rapper, from Pompano Beach, for crimes that involve falsifying information on federal forms to purchase three firearms. Prosecutors say one of the weapons purchased by Black was found at the scene of a shooting in Pompano Beach. A federal judge denied his request for bond saying he was “danger to the community” based on his lengthy criminal record. (CBS Local)
