The unauthorized track landed online Friday (March 13) and features K. Dot dishing on his rise to fame.

A new Kendrick Lamar track from his forthcoming album “To Pimp a Butterfly” (March 23) has leaked. It’s the song whose title we’ve known for a long time; “King Kunta”. This is Kendrick’s tribute to the 18th century slave from Virginia Kunta Kinte whose right foot was cut off because of his attempts to escape his plantation and whose story was portrayed in the “Roots: The Saga of an American Family” novel by Alex Haley. We photographed him for the cover in Hollywood (see video from the shoot below) and visited him at his L.A. studio, where he was scrambling to finish his upcoming album, To Pimp a Butterfly, which is due March 24th. Although he was anxious, Lamar said he loves the recording process: “After [the album] comes out, it’s just a numbers game. The funnest part is making it.” (Rolling Stone)

K. Dot released the must-see artwork via his Instagram page early Wednesday (March 11).

  1. Most of the tracks so far have had a 70’s vibe. That’s my one of my favorite eras of music.
