Hip-hop artists Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monae teamed up with President Barack Obama this Independence Day to wish Malia Ann Obama a happy 18th birthday.
On Monday (July 4), the trio came together for an impromptu “Happy Birthday” song for Malia.
President Obama’s eldest daughter had an extra-special present on her 18th birthday: a round of “Happy Birthday” sung by her dad, with support from Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monae. Obama also gave high praise to the musicians. “These two I’ve gotten a chance to know and they’re both amazing artists and talented and popular and doing great things,” he said. Throughout the holiday, K. Dot performed his hit songs like “Poetic Justice” and “Alright.”
Kendrick’s setlist included “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, “Money Trees”, “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”, “Poetic Justice”, “A.D.H.D.”, and “Alright”. Surprisingly, he did not perform “How Much a Dollar Cost”, which President Obama called his favorite song of 2015. Kendrick also heavily reworked the songs to omit any curse words or controversial language — it was a family friendly event at the White House after all! (Consequence of Sound)
