Top Dawg Entertainment’s Kendrick Lamar gave California concertgoers something to talk about last night (May 15) by performing a new song called “Money Over Love.”

According to reports, K. Dot treated fans at Los Angeles’ Regent Theater to his newest tune.

Producer/composer Adrian Younge had a show in Los Angeles last night at the Regent Theater. As a surprise, he brought out a very special guest: Kendrick Lamar. Senator Isadore Hall showered Lamar with accolades in a speech last weekend at the California State Senate for his Generational Icon award.

“In less than 10 years as a professional artist, Mr. Lamar has gone from a local Compton young boy to become a multi-platinum, Billboard chart-topping, two-time Grammy Award-winning musician, an incredible achievement for anyone 27 years old,” Senator Isadore Hall said. “But Mr. Lamar has not let his recent fame get the best of him. … Mr. Lamar is a familiar face in the neighborhood, giving back to his community that raised him.” (CASenDems)

Lamar accepted the honor and acknowledged turning into a role model for the youth.

“It’s definitely an honor to be right here in front of you guys. Being from the city of Compton, and knowing the parks that I played at, and the neighborhoods, I always thought how great the opportunity would be to give back to my community off what I do in music. In order to do that for my city all the way to a state standpoint and have these young kids look at me as some type of inspiration, it’s really an honor, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for honoring me today.” (CASenDems)

A few weeks ago, Lamar revealed how much of an impact late music mogul 2Pac had on his To Pimp a Butterfly album title.

“That was the original name and they caught it because the abbreviation was Tupac, Tu-P-A-C,” Lamar said after revealing the project’s original title was “Tu Pimp A Caterpillar.” “Me changing it to Butterfly, I just really wanted to show the brightness of life and the word pimp has so much aggression and that represents several things. For me, it represents using my celebrity for good. Another reason is, not being pimped by the industry through my celebrity.” (MTV)
