K. Dot kicked off his set by performing the buzzing “i” single.

For his first set, Lamar brought out a full live band and a chorus of backup singers for the as-yet-unnamed new album’s first single, the Isley brothers-sampling “i.” Wearing creepy black contacts and punctuating the beat with frenetic, jerking choreography, Lamar dedicated the song to his homies in the pen. Lamar also treated viewers to a joint performance alongside TDE’s Jay Rock.

For his second set of the night, K-Dot paid homage to another MC, one with tons of life. Black Hippy’s Jay Rock gave Kendrick his start taking him on the road as his hype man years before Lamar became the star he is today, so to have his TDE label mate join him on the televised stage was fitting. Together the California collaborators, along with singer Chantal, delivered “Pay For It,” Rock’s new single, which also serves as a backdrop for the new Beats By Dr. Dre ad. (MTV)

The rap superstar also raised eyebrows with his on-screen “SNL” attire.

Not only did Kendrick appear in a skit called “Young Tarts & Old Farts, but the Compton rapper performed twice, including a performance with Canadian singer Chantal Kreviazuk and rapper Jay Rock. While the rapping was on point, of course, one of the most notable parts of Kendrick’s triumphant return was his attire: The Compton star rocked his hair half-braided and wore all black contacts in his eyes.
