[SOHH highlights a hot record every week and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the smash in Singled Out. After Chicago rapper Gemstones decoded his “Circles” music video, rap veteran KB unravels his “Fall in Love with You” anthem.]

The first thing that comes to my mind for “Singled Out” is a song on my album called “Fall in Love with You.” It’s a song I wrote about my son.

I actually wrote and sung it way before Kanye West dropped his “Only One” [to North West] song because it’s kind of in the same vain as Kanye’s song but it’s darker.

I was kind of like, “Dang, Kanye! Now everyone’s going to think I copied your song.”

I became a father last year in April and I wanted to take that moment and make a song about it. So when I first saw my son, the first thing I thought was, “Wow, you look very weird. I did not know babies looked like this.”

Then I held him in my hands and all of the alien stuff went out of my head and I fell in love with this child. So I wanted to put that into a record and I figured, “What better way to get that emotion than to be separated from him?” I think it was seven months later when I was separated from him in Africa and I got to go through photos of him on my phone and it got to be very introspective.

Me and a good friend of mine, who is a writer, we sort of put our heads together and it was really us sitting back and thinking, before we even put the pen to the paper, just feeling what’s the emotions that come out.

From that, we came up with “Fall in Love with You.” The song is completely singing because I couldn’t rap that. Although I love hip-hop to death, it really couldn’t do it.

I sort of reached into my secret R&B side and I brought out a lot of smooth and put together that song.
