Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West let his emotions speak over the holiday break by calling out the media, discussing his 2009 MTV/Taylor Swift fiasco and poking fun at ex-girlfriend Amber Rose during the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.

Performing as the only hip-hop headliner at Saturday’s event, Ye spoke his mind throughout multiple records.

“It feels good to be home,” he told the crowd, who at their peak had spilled out of their seats and into every open aisle hoping for a closer glimpse of the rapper. “When I say home, I’m talking about with my people. I been around the world… got into a little controversy here and there. Even though the media tries to lie to you every day I just wanna say I thank ya’ll for standing by me and supporting me even when they said my career was over.” Never one to shy away from being candid, West made mention of his now infamous incident at the 2009 MTV Awards, which set his career into what many had written off as a downward spiral. “I had a little bit to drink that night,” he admitted amidst the audience’s cheers and laughter. West also informed his fans he no longer does media interviews.

West also took fans down his own personal music memory lane playing some his favorite songs, which he credited as inspiring his musical genius. “I don’t do interviews anymore because the press be trying to kill me, I let the music speak for itself,” he said before having his DJ spin hits like Frankie Beverly & Maze’s ‘Before I Let Go,’ Jodeci’s ‘Come And Talk to Me’ and Bell Biv Devoe‘s ‘Poison,’ at which point he took another possible shot at his curvaceous ex-girlfriend Amber Rose, stating “Never trust a big butt and a smile, why ain’t I listen to the song?!” (Popeater)

In April, Yeezy also taunted his ex-girlfriend at the annual Coachella music festival.

After an energetic hour long set at the Californian music festival, West and rapper Wiz Khalifa nearly came to blows in an ugly confrontation over Khalifa’s current girlfriend, the model AmberRose. West, who used to date Rose, took a dig at his ex during a performance of his hit song ‘Stronger.’ The original lyrics of the song includes a line which says: “I’d do anything for a blonde dyke. And she’ll do anything if the time’s right”. Yet, with Rose standing on the side of the stage, West altered the word to: ‘I did anything for that blonde dyke. And she did anything when the time’s right.’ (Independent Online)

Rose later came forward and shared her reaction to Ye’s jab.

“It’s just unfortunate that he said that in the [Coachella performance] song ’cause that’s not the lyrics — I can say whatever I want about him,” Rose said in May 2011. “I can write a book or do whatever but I choose to take the high road. It’s just unfortunate he has to constantly say sh*t.” (KING)
