[With “That’s Hip-Hop Featuring Joell Ortiz” now available, Slaughterhouse’s Joell Ortiz tells SOHH how his Domingo-produced album went from a dope collaborative effort into a Latin pride-fused hip-hop release.]

It feels good, I can tell you that much. We didn’t go into [That’s Hip-Hop] like that but we were meeting and talking about life, sharing common stories, being both Latin.

It felt good throughout the whole process and so it became a proud thing. It didn’t start off as that but it definitely became that especially when we created “Walk With Me” and it’s like, “Clap your hands everybody,” where we’re talking about Black, White, Spanish, whatever. It just felt like a family-oriented record, I just wanted to make it feel good.

We didn’t go into like, “Puerto Rican producer meets Puerto Rican rapper,” it was more like straight up hip-hop but it did turn into a proud thing when we were talking about our upbringing and foods we like and things of that nature.

We both have huge, huge respect for Big Pun and we put Chris Rivers on the project. It just took effect mid-process.
