[With a new “That’s Hip Hop Featuring Joell Ortiz” arriving March 15, Slaughterhouse’s Joell Ortiz talks to SOHH about teaming up with producer Domingo for the unexpected joint effort.]

Domingo reached out to me and I was like, “Ah man, I’ve always wanted to get up on you and do work.” I’ve been a fan of him for a long time and he was a fan of mine. We just rocked out in the studio.

We had no plans to put out an album. It was almost the same thing as when I worked with !llmind where a record turned into another record and it turned into a project.

He was like, “I do a series called “That’s Hip-Hop” and I feature artists, I would love to do one with you and I just did that. It was all vibe. I’m starting to like the work with one producer thing. The ideas are so spread out and the sounds are cohesive, it’s just a good feeling and a good positive vibe in the studio. I like doing it.

This process was about a three-week process. This was just getting to it. I had so many ideas in my mind already so some of the music was matching that or I would tell Domingo the idea and he would create music around the idea. It wasn’t just going in there with blank pieces of paper and blank sounds. It was already things that existed and so it meshed really well.

The process wasn’t very long at all.
