[With NFL star Peyton Manning hanging up the cleats for good last week, Slaughterhouse’s Joell Ortiz tells SOHH what made No. 18 iconic and why his New York Jets still have work to do before the season starts up.]

Peyton Manning was a fantastic quarterback and instant Hall of Famer. Class act. Never got any bad press. A coach on the field. A team leader. He just did things the right way.

Him and Tom Brady are probably the last of the traditional quarterbacks in the league. The pocket passer, the audible caller, the defense reader and things of that nature.

It’s sad to see him go but as a Jets fan, I’m excited. It just gives us more of a shot. We still have to deal with Brady in our division and I’m tired of only looking forward to Wild Cards. We have to look at our quarterback position as well. Is Geno Smith going to be the guy? Is he going to get one more go? Are we going to give him a chance with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker as receivers? Or are we talking about [Ryan] Fitzpatrick and the last two years of his career? Or do we go to the young kid and see what’s going on with him?

The Jets have quarterback issues they have to figure out alongside one of the greats who is retiring. It’s an interesting in the NFL for me but Peyton Manning has been something to watch growing up in football.
