R&B singer Jhené Aiko knows she put out a quality album with her newly released Chilombo. The popular crooner recently chopped it up about the project’s creation and securing some major guest features.
In a new Apple Music Beats 1 interview, Aiko goes over a bunch of topics centered on her LP. In addition to calling Top Dawg Entertainment’s Ab-Soul one of her favorite rappers, she also dished on securing rap pioneer Nas for the LP.
“All of the songs were recorded already and they were full songs. No one was like, ‘You need features.’ I wanted it to just be this full body of work. Because there was a point in time when I felt like, ‘I don’t need features – it’ll be tight with just me.’ But then it’s like the element of collaborating with people and coming together, is just like, we need more of that. … So anyway I did the song. It was a full, complete song and I was just like, ‘This beat – it reminds me of Nas.’ He came and I talked to him about the song and what I meant about certain things, and he went in and killed it.’ I was like, ‘I can’t believe Nas is right there.'” (Apple Music Beats 1)
Last week, Aiko went online to geek out over having the top-selling R&B album with Chilombo. The crooner went to Instagram to celebrate her new LP dominating its competition.
“Thank you for listening. I hear you too”
Wait, There’s More
A few days ago, rap star Lil Uzi Vert co-signed Jhené Aiko’s new solo album. Future, who is featured on the LP, also went to social media to acknowledge the project and promoted their “Happiness Over Everything” single on his Instagram Story page.
“Thank you ya album too hard”
Before You Go
Initial estimates had the album set to debut at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Projections had the LP selling between 95,000 to 120,000 units in its opening week.
