[SOHH highlights a hot record every week and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the smash in Singled Out. After Hustle Gang's Spodee broke down his T.I. and Yo Gotti-featured "Um Hmm" smash, Tennessee native Jelly Roll decodes his catchy "When I Get Rich" banger.]
We did the “When I Get Rich” record about six months ago. Uncle Bill was in the studio and he had a guitar. I said in the studio, “When I get, I’m gonna act broke.” He was like, “You gotta write the song like that!”
We just started working on the record and I just knew it was going to be good. You know how sometimes you just know. That one and “Sunday Morning,” I knew when I cut that it was a big record.
So I took it and performed it every night on the Insane Clown Posse tour. I was opening up for Mushroomhead too, a heavy metal band. It’s real rock, like the actual version, I have Travis Barker on the drums and sh*t, the response was just crazy every night.
But when I knew it was a big song was when I did the Uncle Kracker tour. I had done the Juggalo shows, I had done it in front of the metal heads, I had done it in front of the traditional hip-hop heads, and now I’m going in front of these country, classy type of guys and the record just f*cking blew.
The record was just huge. I knew it was going to work. We’re doing the music video for it now.
Every time we make music, it’s always on the spot. We never leave a song unfinished. As soon as we start it, we gotta finish it.
