Music mogul Jay Z is receiving some serious backlash and criticism this week for appearing to have a lack of African American employees at his streaming service company Tidal.
According to reports, a picture of Jay and R&B wife Beyoncé surrounded by predominantly white workers has sparked criticism.
On the surface, this seems like something to celebrate. Progress and stuff, right? Problem is, Jay played the race card a few weeks ago, when he called out the black community for not backing his company… the way it supports Apple, Nike and Google.
As a result … the Internet has its knives out, making comments like:
– “Jay tried to guilt trip us … but his staff are all white”
– “Jay does a ‘Pro-Black’ freestyle but then releases a picture of #Tidal’s all White staff.”
– “Those who complain of no blacks in white owned institutions. Well here u go Jay Z OWNS TIDAL. U going to protest?”
-“Jay ain’t hiring u n***as” (TMZ)
Pictures of Jay and Bey around the Tidal staff bubbled online earlier this week.
The couple were also swarmed by people during their visit to the Tidal office in Norway a few days ago.
During a Tidal B-Sides concert freestyle earlier this month, Jay Z dropped a few lines aimed at music streaming rivals like Spotify.
“Oh n—s is skeptical of they own shit / You bought nine iPhones and Steve Jobs is rich / Phil Knight worth trillions you still bought those kicks / Spotify’s nine billion and they ain’t say sh*t / ‘Lucyyy you got some splainin’ to do’ / The only one they hatin’ on look the same as you / That’s cool / I know they tryin’ to bamboozle you / Spending billions on meryin’ to confusin you / I had to tell myself ‘Hov, get used to it’ / It’s politics as usual.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
