[With his “Make My Love Go” single still blazing in the summer heat, music veteran Jay Sean talks to SOHH about his approach to collaborating.]
Collaborations have to serve a purpose for me. What I love to do is to bring an additional flavor to a song, not just because that person happens to be poppin’ off or it would be real cool right now. That’s really contrived and feels like an A&R move.
I don’t think it feels authentic.
What I always like to do is listen to the song and say, “How can I take this song to the next level?” I just like to make music and put layers of emotion on it, so when you hear a record like, “Make My Love Go,” you already hear how my music goes. But then you hear Sean Paul’s voice and his flow and his vibe. It just fits.
So if it was “Make My Love Go” featuring Adele, you’d be like, “Huh? Why?” Of course she’s a huge name but does it work? Does it go well on that particular type of song? No. I always go with a vibe and say, “What makes this song and what takes it to the next level?”
