[After West Coast rapper Hopsin pranked fans about retiring from the music industry, Funk Volume’s Jarren Benton talks to SOHH readers about how much he knew of the joke and where it stemmed from.]
I was kind of in on it, [Hopsin] pretty much let everyone know.
He told us he was going to do this sh*t. He said he wanted to do a little promo for this new album he’s got. So he told us and then he called me, I was in LA, and was like, “Hey man, what are you doing?” I was like, “I’m chilling.” He was like, “I want to make this f*cking video with you in it.” That’s when we made the promo video.”
It was all fun and games.
Now don’t get me wrong, Hop has had times where he really did want to quit and was like, ‘F*ck this sh*t.’ I tried to talk to him and I understand where he’s coming from. I was like that too, I just roll with the punches.
It’s so hard to meet genuine people especially when you’re vibing. I think a majority of the industry people I’ve met have been cool but there’s still this robotic mind frame where they all act the same.
I just feel like everyone’s a fake a**. Now don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of humble mother*ckers. When you’re not in that type of mind state, it can be kind of overwhelming.
