[The great producer Jake One recently sat down with hip-hop personality and SOHH Correspondent Shawn Setaro on his popular “The Cipher”podcast. Listen to the full interview and check out five gems Jake dropped during the Q&A.]

On his mentor, legendary Seattle producer Daniel “DJ Mr. Supreme” Clavessilla:

“We went record shopping every day for three or four years. I was in college, so I’d go to class in the morning, and then we’d go record shopping. We did that probably five days a week. If I grabbed something too rare, he’d be like, ‘Yeah, I need that.’ So he’d just take it from me. He big homie’d me a lot, but he deserved it.”

On the “rules” he learned from older producers when he started out:

“Some of these things that were unspoken rules and some of the integrity things about making music have gone by the wayside because you don’t have the older person schooling you. It has its positives and negatives. When we started out, there were rules being placed on us sometimes that weren’t necessarily all the way rational. But it was just what hip-hop had been.”

On producing for G-Unit during their mid-2000s heyday:

“The whole thing with G-Unit that was crazy was, at that time they didn’t want to know who did the beat. Sha [Money XL] would just give them a CD with nobody’s name on it, and they would just pick them. So it was kind of like rap lottery. Nobody would know who was going to be on what record. You wouldn’t know until the end, because they would record so many songs.”

On Freeway:

“I just think he’s one of the more underrated dudes, just because I feel like having your own style in this day and age is so rare. And he really did bring something different to rap as far as the approach to the beat and the flows.”

On Brother Ali:

“Whatever he feels in his heart is what he’s going to say, and that’s what he cares about the most. He’s probably has the most integrity and is the most unwavering in his vision of anybody I’ve worked with. He’s very particular in what he wants to say. Not even the music, but what his message is is so important to him.”
