[With “Empire” season two officially wrapped up, show music producer J.R. Rotem tells SOHH how working on the hit Fox series helped expand his entertainment career.]

This has definitely enhanced my brand. I’m very, very happy with it. It’s all about growing. When I first started producing, it was just great hip-hop beats. I was doing everyone from 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and all these people.

I wanted to do pop. I did Rihanna and Britney Spears and then the next progression was starting my own label and breaking people like Jason Derulo and Sean Kingston. Now in this most recent phase, I’ve been doing a lot of things.

I’ve expanded to rock music and now I’m getting a lot more into TV. I never want to feel like I’m doing the same thing. For me, I actually started off having the desire to want to do music for film and TV.

My path led me more into production and now it sort of comes back to my original goal which is to take what I do and do it on TV and film.

We’re living in an age where people are consuming music as much as ever on their phones. Movie actors are doing a lot more TV, it’s a cool genre of TV. It’s as big and credible as ever.

To now be doing music and one of the main music producers of such a big show, I love it.

It’s really opening up a bunch of other doors in TV and other film opportunities. It’s sort of showing people I can take what I do naturally and shows them I can do it in a different way.

I’m still making people feel things through the songs but it’s just now a different format. For me, I couldn’t be happier.

It’s an expanding thing.
