[SOHH highlights a hot record every week and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the smash in Singled Out. After SOHH First artist YoungGoldie dissected his “Be Yourself” banger, hip-hop artist Iyaz breaks down his Nash-assisted “Alive” comeback single.]
Me and Nash have been friends for the last four years. My last single was out in 2012 so I’ve been out for about the past year and a half.
We did the song. I originally did the song with my cousin thinking, “Who should we put on the song?” I’m kind of anal when it comes to music. I won’t put somebody on just because of who they are.
He was like, “Nash,” and I’m like, “Which Nash,” and he says, “Nash.” So I was like, “Yeah! Let’s try it.”
I sent the song to him and by the time he sent it back to me, that was even more than what I actually had in mind. The whole feel he brought to it with his verse, going up at certain parts, I was like, “Yeah bro, he actually brought the track to life.”
He killed it.
The song stemmed from a conversation I had with some of my friends. We were talking about being in a relationship that everyone is saying is bad for you but you don’t give a crap.
It kind of stemmed from that. We didn’t have in mind ‘this’ kind of single. It was just something we did. We did the song and the same thing happened with [the hit] “Replay.”
You don’t really have it in mind.
If you’re going in there thinking, “Yo, we gotta make a smash!” More than likely it’s not going to be a smash because you’re thinking too hard.
