[ItsTheReal, the popular brothers who seamlessly mix comedy and rap, recently sat down with hip-hop personality and SOHH correspondent Shawn Setaro on his popular “The Cipher” podcast. On their musical goals:

Eric: “Even when we were younger, we always wanted to do original stuff. We always wanted it to have a funny bent to it. We wanted to have it sound as legitimate as possible, but also as funny as possible, so we can bring the comedy and the high-end production.”

On imitators:

Eric: “There’s videos out online regularly by large publications, by small YouTube sites, that definitely bite our style and are not as funny as us. And you know what? We’re happy to stay above everybody else in our lane and continue to move past them.”

On their new album Teddy Bear Fresh:

Eric: “Like you do in anything, we found our voice and we found our point of view. I think this is even more listenable than the first project. For us, it’s very complete and comprehensive, and we’re very proud of it.”

On how their podcast A Waste of Time stands out among hip-hop podcasts:

Jeff: “Everybody has different voices. We don’t really fall into the same sort of conversations that Combat Jack or Rap Radar or anybody else has. We also have different guests on.”

On their upcoming show on 2/23 at SOBs:

Eric: “We’ve gone from performing for 25-30 of our friends to this famed venue in New York. Like the New York Times article, this is a note of legitimacy for us. Our extended family won’t understand it, but for the community we love and respect, to be up on that stage on a night like this is amazing.”
