With the release of his Finally Famous debut, SOHH recently hit up Big Sean to find out what his long-awaited G.O.O.D. Music LP represents for his Detroit hometown.
Claiming everything he does is for Motown, Sean said the LP is motivated by his city’s love.
“H*ll yeah, I represent Detroit in everything I do,” Sean told SOHH when asked if he is ready to carry the torch for his city. “That’s my city, they show me love. Detroit is a city where you have to earn your love. I earned their love and they show me love back. Everything I do is for my city. Detroit has the most soul in the world and I feel like it’s my shot to show it to the whole world and show a different perspective than Eminem shows. But shout-out to Em, shout-out to Kid Rock and Royce Da 5’9, Trick Trick, Slum Village, Street Lord.” (SOHH)
Sean also said if fans listen closely, they can notice the multiple Detroit rap influences in his music.
“H*ll yeah I was influenced by Detroit rappers,” Sean added. “I feel like you can hear the lyricism from Eminem, Royce Da 5’9 in my music. I try to keep some soul in my music as well. You can hear the J. Dilla, Slum Village. I feel like every Detroit artist you can hear a little bit of them in me.” (SOHH)
Last month, Detroit’s eLZhi talked to SOHH and gave his impression of the hip-hop rookie.
“We done kicked it out in L.A. together and he pulled me out on stage and introduced me to ‘his’ audience of fans who might not know who I [am],” eL told SOHH. “It’s much love to him. He’s a real cool brother and I definitely like what he’s doing. I let him know numerous amounts of times that I’ve seen him out there [and] I like what he’s doing. What’s crazy is [rapper] Mike Posner is trying to get me and Big Sean on a record together. So once everybody is free and able to do that, we’re gonna jump in the studio and knock that out. It’s just a matter of timing. I got with Mike Posner [about a month ago] and he said, ‘Let’s make it happen.’ Everybody is definitely down to do it, we’re just trying to figure out when the time’s right.” (SOHH)
A few months ago, Sean opened up about the significance of his album’s title.
“The title as of now is gonna be called Finally Famous,” Sean said in an interview. “I may at the last minute add a subtitle to it because that’s also the name of my mixtape series I did. That’s something I really wanna brand as a lifestyle because that’s what I believe in. When you’re famous you’re recognized for doing something, and I always put finally in front of it because I feel like this sh*t’s what we’ve been grinding and working for all these years, and that can relate to anybody. As far as production majority of it was done by No I.D. which I feel is not even fair because he’s just so d*mn good and he’s such an O.G. and he’s seen music come full circle. He really has a great perspective on music and is definitely one of my mentors.” (XXL Mag)
