Issa Stays Connected To Her Black Roots

Issa Rae’s body of work shows passion for representing the Black experience. As the creator, writer, and main character of Insecure, she captured the essence of modern Black life and received widespread acclaim. The series garnered multiple Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominations and resonated with audiences who saw themselves reflected in the authentic and relatable storylines. 

Beyond Insecure, Issa continues championing diversity and representation in the entertainment industry. She lends her voice to the character of Spider-Woman in the highly-anticipated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where she portrays a motorbike-riding badass who mentors Gwen. 

Additionally, through her production banner HOORAE, she collaborates with Black producers and brings stories with predominantly Black casts to the forefront. Projects like Rap Sh!t, A Black Lady Sketch Show, Sweet Life: Los Angeles, and the upcoming Project Greenlight showcase her commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices.

Before her breakthrough, the Los Angeles native hosted the YouTube series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, which garnered attention for its witty and realistic portrayal of Black women’s everyday experiences. This early project established her subsequent success and demonstrated her dedication to authentic storytelling.

Despite her success, Issa Rae remains grounded and connected to her roots. She will attend the 2023 American Black Film Festival, solidifying her ongoing support for the festival celebrating Black excellence in cinema. Additionally, her recent casting as the first Black Barbie president in the upcoming live-action Barbie movie highlights her commitment to breaking barriers and representing diverse narratives on screen.
