Old School Meets New School

The new iteration of the beloved Ninja Turtles has arrived. On March 6, Paramount Pictures released the official teaser for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem on their official YouTube channel.

The teaser features A Tribe Called Quest’s 1990 classic “Can I Kick It?” and introduces viewers to a much younger take on the regarded reptiles. The turtles can be seen recording one another testing their prowess while slicing open fruit with their signature weapons, and goofing off around a warm-colored, Into the Spider-Verseesque New York City.

Can Fans Expect A New Turtles Anthem?

Mutant Mayhem features a star-studded cast of old-school Hollywood veterans and some new names. Martial arts legend Jackie Chan and hip-hop icon Ice Cube joins the cast as Master Splinter and Superfly while Ayo Edebiri from FX’s The Bear, Post Malone, and The Chi’s Shamon Brown Jr. plays April O’ Neil, Ray Fillet, and Michelangelo

Cube took to Instagram to share his casting announcement.

Hip-Hop and the turtles are as much of a duo as their love for pizza. In the 1990s, New York hip-hop also included their love for TMT with songs that included —  duo Partners in Kryme,  who released “Turtle in Power” in 1990, and Vanilla Ice followed up his “Ice Ice Baby” success with “Ninja Rap,” an original track he dropped after receiving the script for TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze

In 2014, Juicy J, Ty Dolla $ign, and Wiz Khalifa released “Shell Shocked” for the recent live-action adaptation of the Turtles. With A Tribe Called Quest featured on Mutant Mayhem’s soundtrack and the cast featuring both Cube and Malone, could another turtle anthem- in the vein of “Sunflower”-be on the horizon?
