G-Unit leader 50 Cent reveals his disinterest in helping pen hit records for artists after putting time and energy into Game's 2005 debut album, The Documentary, in the new issue of VIBE magazine.
When compared to Jay-Z‘s business tactics, 50 explained what separates him from Young Hov.
“Jay will write a song for [Diddy]. The hit record he got right now, Jay did for him,” 50 explained in the interview. “I’m not doing that. I got my a** kicked writing hit records for Game. I’m not doing that anymore. I’ve already exhausted myself in that area. I don’t have anything against them. I’ve had issues with both of them at different points. When you go down a dark avenue with me, then we go headfirst. They understand who i am. This is why when I run into Jay or Puff it’s not an issue. It’s always like ‘Why can’t you do it like that? You could have said this.'” (VIBE)
After Game’s Documentary dropped in 2005, 50 called out the rapper for not giving him more public credit which later resulted in a back-and-forth beef.
The Game’s barbed and bold freestyles caught the ear of Dr. Dre, who signed him to Aftermath in 2003 and executive produced his debut. It was delayed a few times, but The Documentary finally dropped in January 2005. Soon the Game and 50 Cent were at war over the former’s reluctance to beef with any and every enemy of G-Unit. Freestyles and mixtapes were spawned in amazing amounts from both sides, and every time a truce seemed possible, things fell apart at the last minute. (All Music)
Earlier this year, Game clarified 50’s contribution to his debut and specifically their “Westside Story” collaboration.
“‘Westside Story’ was supposed to go on the All About The Benjamins soundtrack. But Dre was like, ‘Nah, this sh*t is too hard for the soundtrack. This the first song on the album.’ [That song was written in 2002 but] I never went back and edited the lyrics. We just kept it, and [later] 50 came in, heard the sh*t, and wrote the hook for it. Wasn’t none of them sh*ts 50’s records. 50 came in after all of the records were already d*mn near done and he put his 50 Cent on them. I wasn’t [a part of G-Unit yet]. (Complex)
As of now, 50 is working on a follow-up to 2009’s Before I Self Destruct album.
“I tweeted something about the actual single,” 50 explained in an interview. “While I’m out here, I gotta meeting and I gotta sit with Jimmy [Iovine], I gotta sit with the guys that push the button. I’ve done it by myself on my other albums because I’ve got my own radio staff, and I work the record, then get it to 500 hundred spins and then let them kick in. But I think it’s better if I go with the entire building and have everybody on deck so they understand my plans for this project.” (MTV)
