Music video director Benny Boom has reportedly landed the job of directing the biopic of late hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur.
According to reports, production company Morgan Creek has hired Boom to replace previous director Carl Franklin.
The company, which has been working for years to bring the late rapper’s story to the big screen, is operating with a sense of urgency given that the music rights will revert back to Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, at the end of the year if the film isn’t in production by then. Carl Franklin was poised to direct as recently as the summer, picking up the baton after John Singleton dropped out in April and trashed Morgan Creek in the process. (Billboard)
Benny has since confirmed the big news on Instagram.
Production and casting for the biopic reportedly started to take place last summer.
Still no word who will play Tupac. And now the production is casting for Dr. Dre, Biggie Smalls, and Faith Evans. But the Morgan Creek-produced film has a start date of October. Of course, “Tupac” becomes much more incendiary with the main character’s unsolved murder. Also, the production may have to cast Madonna, who now talks about her 1993 affair with the rapper openly. According to reports, creative differences ultimately sparked director John Singleton’s departure from the biopic last spring.
“There are major creative differences,” an individual with knowledge of the project said. “Honestly, Morgan Creek can make a sub-par Tupac movie and move on. If John Singleton makes a bad Tupac movie? It’s something he’d have to live with for the rest of his life.” Carl Franklin, who directed Denzel Washington in 1995’s “Devil in a Blue Dress,” will replace Singleton, TheWrap has learned. Franklin is repped by Paradigm, Anonymous Content and attorney Lawrence Rose. (TheWrap)
good
As long as he doesn’t make it into a continuous video like how Hype did Belly, maybe it will work. The best thing in Belly was the opening scene.
this kind of movie with a person that has such great worth to the entire music culture , should not be treated as a try out test drive….the money will be made back…so why not just get a team….i say team because pac was complicated…he was a artist as much as a thug…a poet as much much as hard worker…the film will make money so why not allow it to be honest…if thats to hard to be possible than i would suggest handing over a small percentage of control to dre and snoop….as a a fan i dont need the whole book …give me one great chapter
