“He Took The Rap Game To A Whole ‘Nother Level”

Written By S. Samuel

[Each week, SOHH asks two entertainment personalities to name their Top 5 rappers of all-time. To make things tricky, we've created a "Hall of Fame" of emcees (see right) who are universally respected and therefore may not be mentioned. After Zaytoven unveiled his fave five, Lil' Kim protégé Tiffany Foxx whips out her top picks.]

tiffany-foxx-2013-07-31-50x65.pngTiffany Foxx. Tiffany Foxx is on my top five because I feel like she can compete with the best of them. I wouldn’t be her in the category of just a female emcee. I put her in the category of hip-hop. Period. She can hold her own. She doesn’t really need a co-sign or nobody to hold her hand. Everything about her is authentic.

kendrick-lamar.jpgKendrick Lamar. He knows how to tell a story. Kendrick still has that roundaway type of way, almost like a cousin, someone you could relate to. He’s not trying to live in the life as far as popping bottles or clubbing it. He knows how to tell a story. He knows how to draw you in. He knows how to play with his voice. He’s a very dope lyricist.

p-lauryn-hill.jpgLauryn Hill. Lauryn Hill taught us women how to respect ourselves. She was a triple threat. She knew how to sing, how to rap and how to act. She knew how to carry herself. As opposed to her personal situation, we don’t care about that. Everything is about perception and she got me through a lot of situations where it was like, ‘Hhmm, I could look at it from this perspective and come out with better results,’ and it was all through her music. When I listend to her, I was going through a lot, so her music is very personal to me.

nelly-2013-07-31-50x65.pngNelly. Nelly took the rap game to a whole ‘nother level. He came with his own style and personality. Of course he’s from St. Louis, and he’s attractive. He’s attractive and he had a lane. He was the LL Cool J of our time and he was very talented at what he did.

lil-kim-2012-07-24-50x65.jpgLil’ Kim. Of course, for obvious reasons, she’s been around this sh*t for a long time. She was the protégé of Notorious B.I.G. and she followed in his footsteps and showed how to get along with the big boys. She always came through in her delivery and I respect that from somebody that’s 4’10 and all. She changed the game, she put me up on styles, I learned all of that from her.
