Ocean took to his Twitter page Wednesday (July 11) to break the news.

“album won’t be available at target. blame it on a generational gap. best buy on deck though.,” he tweeted Wednesday (July 11). (Frank Ocean’s Twitter)

The singer’s manager recently hinted at why Target fell back from carrying the project.

Target will not be carrying Frank Ocean’s debut studio album, “Channel Orange,” in response to the label’s decision to sell it ahead of its scheduled release date via iTunes — not due to Ocean’s sexuality — according to statements from the company and Ocean’s manager. iTunes is the sole digital seller of the album until July 17. Ocean admitted in a recent Tumblr post that he had a past romantic relationship with a man. In a tweet early Tuesday, Ocean’s manager, Christian Clancy, implied that the admission influenced Target’s decision not to carry the album, although he quickly deleted the Tweet and has since recanted. Ocean’s decision to put the LP out exclusively through iTunes this week reportedly influenced Target’s decision.

According to Ocean’s manager, Christian Clancy, the early release of Channel Orange means that Target will no longer stock the physical version of the album when it is released next Tuesday. Though, the way he sees it, that decision may also have something to do with his client’s recent revelation. “Target has refused to carry Frank’s album because of iTunes exclusive,” Clancy wrote in a (since-deleted) tweet. “Interesting since they also donate to non-equal rights organizations.” (MTV)

The iTunes exclusive is reportedly en route to push big numbers in its opening week.

The week’s big story is controversial Def Jam/IDJ avant-R&B crooner Frank Ocean, a member of the L.A.-based hip-hop collective Odd Future, who will open with a very impressive 110-125k as an iTunes exclusive for his major label bow, Channel Orange. Ocean surprised everyone by Tweeting the album would be made available after his network TV debut Monday night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon singing “Bad Religion” from the release.
