[With an impressive music career spanning over a decade, former Cash Money artist Jay Sean talks to SOHH about how he’s managed to remain a high-profile global attraction with hit singles and big albums.]

I learned very quickly how fortunate I was to have a global fan base. I study music the same way I studied in school. I was very academic and I always used to apply myself to understand stuff on a deeper level.

That’s the music game. I’ve kind of found out why something strikes a chord with people and how it strikes a chord with people. I’ve studied to find out why some songs are massive hits and others just don’t quite get there.

I realized I could do all of this stuff, making music that makes me feel good but at the end of the day, this music is why I’m still here after 13 years. It’s because my fans still f*ck with my music.

You can’t forget that. You have to understand and keep in mind, “What would they want to hear from me?” I know I could do a bunch of different stuff from R&B to dance, I could do all of that stuff, but how do I give them that magic?

I always keep that in mind and I see, as I travel around the world, what connects with people.
