That [“Something To Believe In”] song came from Aloe Blacc. Aloe Blacc was filming the James Brown movie and I called him while he was on the set and I asked him to hop on the album and said, ‘Could you hop on one of my records?’

He said, “I’ll do you one better, I’ll hop on two records’ and he ended up hoping on another song as well called “It’s A Good Thing”.

He sent me a song that he wanted me to hop on, that I could have for my album. He sent his full album, with unreleased Aloe Blacc songs, and I was like ‘This is insane’.

It was a bunch of really soulful songs, really classic Aloe Blacc music. So I took “Something to Believe In” and it didn’t fit with the album, with what we had thus far so we gave it to DJ Khalil.

Then when DJ Khalil put his hands on it and returned it back it just sounded like a whole new monster, a whole new thing. So that’s when I began to write my verse and then I bumped into Nas in Europe when I was shooting the cover for my album, played it for him, and then before you know it I had the verse from Nas and I was just going crazy, once I had heard that.

That’s how that song was born. That’s one of my favorite songs on the album.
