The Inside Out | Mi Gente / Oyáte kiŋ project was an artistic experience that enriched those closely participating in its implementation.

This concept created by famed photographer JR allows for participants to experience personal empowerment and personal reflection. It is a means to draw attention to these communities and their people, beauty, history, humor and struggles.

Both communities share deep histories of disenfranchisement and marginalization. These portraits are a glimpse of people with great dignity, dream and hopes for a better life.”

On November 14th, El Barrio Artspace PS109 a brand new 90 unit live/work art space and Hi-ARTS, a non profit organization will be releasing a photo exhibition titled Inside Out: The Peoples Art Project. Following in the footsteps of prolific photographer and TED prize winner JR, this groundbreaking series will showcase the people of the Spanish Harlem community who face immense struggles such as poverty, unemployment, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy. Their portraits will be blown up and on display at the Hi-ARTS gallery in Harlem; giving a raw and unfiltered look into the people in the community and their stories – all curated by Carlos Mare.
