Brooklyn rapper Fabolous recently reflected on the release of his The S.O.U.L. Tape 3 and, specifically, a track aimed toward artists like Kendrick Lamar and Trinidad James.
Fab said his “Get Back” record touches on the backlash K. Dot sparked with his now-infamous “Control” verse from last summer.
“I want to talk about the ‘Get Back.’ It’s over one of Jay Z‘s samples and it plays reference to what was going on with the whole Kendrick ‘Control’ verse thing. At first, it was a big thing to respond back and everybody was hyped off the response. What I loved about it to is that a lot of people responded back to it without really knowing what was going on. They just heard the blatant said, ‘King of New York’ line and ‘The ‘Get Back’ is taken from, once you say something you also have to live and die by your words. But then now it becomes on other people to get back. It’s almost the revenge of what you’re saying. Do you relish in it? Do you back away from it? Do you step up to the plate? A lot of times, people don’t always think about the backlash or what’s going to come back to them.” (FUSE TV)
Loso also used the record to briefly reference Trinidad James recently questioning the mainstream New York hip-hop scene.
“I touched on the Trinidad James thing because he was someone recently [who said similar things],” Fab added. “He said something and people weren’t really [understanding] and they were in an uproar about it and didn’t know what they should do about it. Even myself, at first hearing, I was ready to go into the studio and just fire back because I felt like someone just disrespected your home so I sat and listened to it and I heard different things. [I] even spoke to some of the OG’s and they were like, ‘Sit back, take your time with with and see what’s going on.’ A lot of people were jumping at it for the attention’s sake.” (FUSE TV)
Footage of Loso offering up some words about Lamar’s “King of New York” line made surfaced earlier this year.
“I said Brooklyn, we in this motherf*cker tonight,” Fab said during a concert. “I’ma give it to ’em one more time. I said I’m a motherf*cking king in my city. I’m the motherf*cking wing in my city. I’m from the pj’s, so it’s only right I’m the flyest n*gga in my city. So that thing about Kendrick saying he’s the king? Don’t ask me how I took it, n*gga. The real n*ggas know all the real kings came from Brooklyn, n*gga. Brooklyn, we love y’all motherf*ckers to death, man. New York City, make some noise!” (The Trophy Life)
Back in August, Fab explained why he fell back on responding to Lamar’s bars.
“That’s a hot topic on the market, and when I first heard I was going to address it on the surface of what it was, somebody from out of New York claiming they the “King of New York,” but I took my time and I spoke with some OG’s, I researched it a little bit and got some more history behind it. Also, how everybody jumped into it for an intention play would change the situation as well, so a lot of guys stepped in and said their peace, but you also saw a lot of guys who were mentioned on the song, or who you would expect to have responses to the song, really didn’t take that approach, but am gonna tell you one thing that an OG told me, he said “if you do respond, make it work for you, make it come on your time, and not just like you trying to feed the twitter fans with a freestyle.” So I got that in the back of mind, so you might hear something eventually…” (The Source)
