Jailed and disgraced former Team USA Olympics doctor Larry Nassar is going to spend the rest of his life and then some behind bars. A judge has sentenced him to nearly 200 years in jail for a slew of sexual assault and abuse charges.
After a weeklong publicized trial, Nassar finally had his sentence delivered to him Wednesday (January 24) in a Michigan court.
The disgraced former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison, a judge announced Wednesday, after more than 150 women and girls said in court that he sexually abused them over the past two decades. “I’ve just signed your death warrant,” Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said in a Lansing, Michigan, courtroom. “I find that you don’t get it, that you’re a danger. That you remain a danger.” (CNN)
Prior to getting handed 175 years, Nassar addressed his victims in the courtroom.
Given an opportunity to address the court before sentencing, Dr. Nassar apologized and, occasionally turning to the young women in the courtroom, said: “Your words these past several days have had a significant effect on myself and have shaken me to my core. I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days.” Several women sobbed in the gallery as he spoke. (New York Times)
