Ex-Crip Big U On Cops Saying Gangs Uniting To Kill Them: “That’s Only A License For Them To Go Out & Kill More Young African Americans”

[With global attention centered on Baltimore, Maryland amid the death of Freddie Gray this week, former Crips leader-turned-activist/peacemaker Eugene “Big U” Henley speaks to SOHH about law enforcement claiming gang rivals are uniting to kill them.]

I don’t want to endorse violence at all but I definitely want to speak up for our men. I definitely defend our men standing up.

I wouldn’t want to see anybody in the streets throwing rocks.

They’re putting out the rumors right now in Baltimore saying the Crips and the Bloods are banding together to go out and kill police. That’s only a license for them to go out and kill more young African Americans.

Think about it.

So now I propose the question, how do you know who is a gang member? What’s the difference? If you don’t know me and you don’t know my culture, how do you know who is a gang member?

What’s the determining factor? It used to be tattoos but now everyone has tattoos on their face and their ears.

I don’t know what should be done in that situation but I’m a fighter though, personally. I’m 48-years-old. I’m not going to lay down. I won’t accept any and everything.

There’s just certain things I’m not going to accept.

In LA, gangs united. It was from the [LA] riots or possibly the 51 murders by National Guard’s men. There were a lot of Crips and Bloods that put down their beefs to deal with the people who were killing them.

Before the riots, it was really dangerous. You couldn’t go into certain neighborhoods. But the riots actually helped because it was a chance for young black men to come together and say, “We have a common enemy.”

It’s terrible that you would have to consider your own countrymen as your enemy.

The mentality that’s going on in our police force is ridiculous. You have a license to kill.
