Soulful singer Erykah Badu is lighting up social media this weekend after taking a playful jab at Hustle Gang’s Iggy Azalea during the Soul Train Awards Sunday (November 29).
Badu, who hosted the show, name-dropped Iggy and questioned her presence in hip-hop in front of a shocked audience.
Rap veteran Da Brat recently gave Nicki Minaj the edge over Iggy when asked about their hip-hop careers.
“I definitely feel like Nicki’s gonna have longevity. I’m not sure about Iggy. Right now she’s dope, but I’m not sure. I haven’t really heard her ‘spit-spit’, and ‘spit-spitting’ is coming back. Nicki spits.” (VLAD TV)
Standing up for Iggy and saying the negative portrayals were unfair, ex-boyfriend A$AP Rocky recently argued authenticity would always win.
“It comes with the game. If she fake on something, somebody is going to call her bluff. That’s life. I’m not looking at it from a standpoint of “I used to be boning this chick’s back out.” I’m looking at it [as] “She’s just a person.” You can’t bluff. You gotta just be 100. A few months ago, Iggy said she probably received backlash from hip-hop heads because of her impressive skills.

What is the difference between what Iggy Azzaelia does, and what Nikki Minaj does? They are both commercialized products. If Nikki’s shit is considered rap, so should Iggy’s. In a perfect world neither one would get airplay, but it is what it is.

Nicki came up as an Emcee. She was in a rap group and dropped 3 mixtapes BEFORE she even got signed to Lil Wayne. She, as opposed to Iggy, can actually rap. She’s been on the radio and asked to freestlye and actually rapped and destroyed tracks. She’s been on songs with Lil Wayne and Drake, both of whom were (whether you agree or not) between the 2 of thm considered the best rappers in the game the last 7 years or so. And she not only hold her own, but outshined them on occasion. She got on a track with Jay Z, widely considered the best rapper ever, and Kanye West, a hip hop legend, and completely outshined them in one of the best rap verses of the last decade. She’s released over 40 songs that have charted on Billboard and has platinum album sales. Not to mention she was considered the best MC of 2014 by Complex magazine……

Neither one of these bitches writes their own raps so yes they are. Nicki is more pop than rap. One tries to sound black when she raps and the other tries to sound white. Nicki’s biggest songs are Super Bass and Starships, neither of which “sell sex” but even if that were true, most female (and even some male) artists have used sex appeal to sell records. (e.g. Beyonce, Mariah, Madonna, D’angelo, Prince, Drake) Doesn’t take away from her skills as an MC.
Iggy never bodied a verse, Nicki has. Iggy never dropped a freestyle, Nicki has. Iggy never wrote a verse, Nicki has.

It’s a yearly thing. Nas didn’t drop an album in 2014. It’s based on the work that was released in 2014 and the truth is no one rapper had a better year commercially than Nicki. You could call it a slow year (it was) but still she dominated the charts and the streets.

Neither is true, but Nicki is waay better than she gets credit for and if she was a dude who did the kind of numbers she did while rapping the way she does, she would be considered the top of the game.
I usually don’t like commercial stuff nor the radio so I would not know, nor did I know someone named her MC of the year in 2014, that was new to me. I know she is not as nice as she was pre deal when I first heard her, feel she dumbed it down a lot and did not stick to the same style that got her up, but it sells so? I am just not a fan of that stuff.
