The series opens with a little boy, Jace, who is abandoned by his father who leaves him with a drawing of a puzzle.  We then see Jace in the present day — now a young man — holding the same puzzle drawing from the day his father left.  His mother has been raising him alone and supporting his aspirations to play basketball and he’s now the number 1 player in the DMV. Emerging talent, Isaiah Hill (nephew of rap icon Ms. Lauryn Hill), plays a teenage Jace in his first starring role.

O’shea Jackson, Jr. (son of rapper O’Shea “Ice Cube” Jackson, Sr.) plays Ike aka Ikon, who won state champion MVP and played for Georgetown but now works in a hardware store. Jace’s mother would like Ike to coach Jace and get him where he needs to be. Although Ike bests Jace in a test game of one-on-one, Ike admits to his wife that Jace has talent and that he still would love to train him.

The second half of the episode comes in strong as Jace is detained by police while taking out the trash.  The officer confuses him with a gang member and mistakenly IDs him as a carjacking suspect.  Another cop recognizes him as a local basketball star and uncuffs him.

Jace shows up at school the next day and is ridiculed because his loss to the coach is all over social media.  Jace’s teammates know that Jace plans to leave the team and try to encourage him to stay.   While Jace is making his decision, he watches some clips of Coach Ike’s younger days as a star player and decides to stay.

Next, we get some clips of the people that are around Jace.  Phil, the neighborhood bully, is seen nursing his bruises with ice and watching a man — possibly the person behind the bruises — sleep. Jace’s friend Crystal is seen taking off her boots to get ready for basketball but then puts them back on as someone comes into her house. Jace is shown getting ready for their debut game.

As the show wraps up, the team is playing to get to the Florida tournaments and Jace loses the first game for the team when he misses his free throws. Ike punches another coach in the face for being disrespectful and lands himself in jail. In the last scene, Jace takes down his old NBA poster on his wall and replaces it with his father’s puzzle drawing with the inspirational words emblazoned on the back: “N.B.A – Never Be Afraid.”
