Grammy-winning rapper Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 album fell just 8,000 copies short of selling 800,000 units in its opening week but still managed to crush its competition.
According to Nielsen SoundScan‘s official tally, Slim Shady’s new LP pushed out a massive 792,000 copies in week one.
As reported yesterday, Eminem makes a splash at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new album “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” debuts atop the list with 792,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. It marks the second-largest sales week of the year, behind only the arrival of Justin Timberlake‘s “The 20/20 Experience,” which started with 968,000 in March. The year’s second-largest week had been the debut of Drake’s “Nothing Was the Same” (658,000). (Billboard)
According to yesterday reports, Slim Shady’s latest solo offering had sold just under 780,000 records.
The first week sales are in for Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2, and the results are very positive overall. The Detroit native sold approximately 779,000 units in its initial sales. This number makes it the second highest-selling album in 2013, below Justin Timberlake‘s 968,000 sold for The 20/20 Experience. However, that number is enough to make it the highest selling rap album of the year, supplanting Drake’s Nothing Was The Same. Drake’s third album moved 658,000 units. Eminem had close to no competition this week when it came to sales. Finishing in second place this week was Celine Dion with her newest album, Loved Me Back To Life, which sold only 77,000 in its first week of sales. (Complex)
Based on weekend projections, Slim Shady’s album was expected to push out at least 725,000 copies in the first seven days.
YOUR TOP 15 (PLUS ONE): As expected, Eminem will debut at #1 on next week’s chart in exactly the same range as his previous album, Recovery, debuted in 2010. Following the CMAs, Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line remain flat or gain slightly vs. last week. Other CMA beneficiaries on next week’s chart will include Kacey Musgraves and Blake Shelton, although neither appear headed for the Top 15 at this point. Duck Dynasty clan The Robertsons’ Duck the Halls holds remarkably strong in its second week, dipping only a few thousand units. Will it be the best-selling holiday album of 2013? Stay tuned. A few years ago, Em downplayed the importance of selling millions of albums.
“I don’t think I’ve actually stopped to think about it,” Eminem said referencing being named artist of the decade. “I never thought that my life would amount to this. But to be able to sit back and digest it is so strange to me, because I still feel so regular. I don’t understand what people think the big deal is about me. It’s a very strange relationship that I have with fame…Honestly, as long as people enjoy the music, that means the most to me. I could sell 80 million records in the first week, and if my peers or fans of real hip-hop didn’t like it, it really wouldn’t mean anything.” (Rap Radar)
