Young Money's Drake will add a polished, vivrant feel to his upcoming Take Care sophomore effort by recruiting hip-hop pioneer Q-Tip as an album collaborator.
According to Tip, he will serve as a producer on Drake’s Thank Me Later follow-up.
Q-Tip also provided a beat for rap phenom Drake’s much-anticipated follow-up to this summer’s Thank Me Later, though he has yet to hear the finished product of that collaboration. “He told me it’s incredible,” Q-Tip deadpans. “I’m going to take his word for it.” (Entertainment Weekly)
Another hip-hop pioneer, DJ Premier, will also showcase his skills on Drake’s forthcoming project.
“I met Drake at the Jay-Z and Eminem concert at Yankee Stadium. A good friend of mine does some charity work for Derek Jeter and was also working with Drake…He told me Drake wanted to come say [hello] real quick before he got on the stage with Jay…He said ‘Yo next album I want to do some stuff [with you]’ and that’s pretty much the end of it.’ He comes down and sits down next to us to watch the show and everybody in all the other suites next to us started bugging. He was just chilling there and not acting like he was too cool.” (VIBE)
In October, Drake discussed working with renowned producer 9th Wonder.
“I think the best part about what me and 9th have is time,” Drake said in an interview. “We have time to get it right so a lot of the collaborative that’s been going on at this point have been discussions — like, when I work [with] somebody, because I work so close with 40, because I know Boi-1da so well, they’ve been in my life since I was 18, 19. I like to really know somebody if I’m going to bring them in on a project. I think the best part is me and 9th, I’ve probably seen more of 9th than my mom in the last three weeks. I mean, me and 9th, we’re building towards a working relationship that goes beyond ‘Oh let me get some beats and I’ll record to them.’ I’m more looking forward to when I get off this tour in November, sitting down together, really crafting some stuff and we’ve talked about some things that would be great.” (The Wonder Year)
Earlier this month, Drake detailed the importance of how his sophomore album is presented.
“Take Care is it’s own mission,” Drake said in an interview. “I’m really going back to the So Far Gone where, first of all, as much as the label and people are fighting me, I’m not doing 14 songs, ’cause it doesn’t give me enough. I want to do interludes, transitions and different moments. I have an overabundance. I’ve never had this many raps…It’s gonna be an experience…I often hear people reference So Far Gone and Comeback Season, ‘Aww, we miss that.’ And while that was a point in time they miss, I was an underdog, and that will never happen again, unfortunately…That’s not to say I can’t provoke those same emotions…I really want to write great ‘life’ raps. I just want to write for the people and speak for my generation.” (Shade 45)
Take Care is expected to drop in 2011.
