While fans are still awaiting a release date for Dr. Dre's Detox album, the producer/rapper's Aftermath artist 50 Cent has reminded hip-hop heads of the icon's historic track record.
Referencing Dre-produced hits found on his 2003 debut and Eminem‘s records, 50 feels the upcoming album’s anticipation should be at an all-time high.
“I think everyone is,” said 50 referring to the project’s anticipation, who inked a deal with Eminem and Dre before releasing his acclaimed debut album. “When you got a producer that has that kind of production track record, you even have to credit both Eminem’s success and my success to Dr. Dre as a producer,” he told MTV News. “My first single off of Get Rich or Die Tryin’ — people constantly tell me it was a classic — was produced by Dr. Dre, ‘In Da Club.’ Without that momentum from that song, I’m not sure they would have taken to ‘P.I.M.P.’ the same way or ’21 Questions’ or any of the other hit records I released following that.” (MTV)
Prior to an Interscope Records representative’s denial, Dre’s album was speculated to drop in April.
Dr. Dre fans can finally exhale. After a decade of waiting for Detox, the hip-hop icon has announced his album’s release date in a rather anticlimactic way. Producer Just Blaze posted a video of himself in the studio with the Doc. While Blaze plugged his artist Saigon‘s project, Dre revealed the date many doubted would ever come. “4/20, baby. 4/20, I’m comin’,” said The Chronic rapper, referring to April 20, the pot smokers’ holiday. You may notice that 4/20 is a Wednesday, a day later than the traditional Tuesday release in the U.S. When asked why Dre opted to miss a day of the sales week, Just Blaze responded on Twitter, saying, “We talked about that. [I’m] sure the publicity and hype of the date release would make up for the lost day.” (Rap-Up)
To understand the producer’s mindframe, SOHH recently hit up Just Blaze and learned of the Doc’s early Detox intentions.
“I think when Dre first started talking about it, he wasn’t ready to do it. From conversations I’ve had with him, when he actually did start working on it, he said to me, “I was doing it before because it was expected and it was because it’s what the fans wanted but I wasn’t necessarily ready to do it. Now I’m ready to go.” I think it may be a situation where he might have mentioned it or put the word out there too early. Sometimes, us creatives types, we do that. We think out loud, we say things we’re planning on doing but may not actually be in the space to do yet, and so you really have to get to that point in order to really give and put the right product out.” (SOHH Guest Star)
SOHH also talked to Detox contributing producer Alex Da Kid about his take on the delay.
“I think a lot of what makes Dr. Dre’s Detox [release so anticipated] is because he’s such a unique producer,” Alex told SOHH. “He doesn’t do things just because he feels like he has to do them. He’s at a point in his career where he can do whatever feels good for him and if he wants to spend 11 years on an album, he can do that…He’s definitely a professor and master at what he does, so I think it’ll definitely live up to the hype. It’s going to mean so much to hip-hop just to get another Dre album, it’s something that we all need. It’s a good reference for where hip-hop is right now. There’s no better person who can tell that story than Dre and that’s a good thing.” (SOHH)
