[After treating fans to his "Pull Up On The Block” banger this past Thanksgiving, Maryland native DJ Young Music tells SOHH how his relationship with R&B veteran Ginuwine sparked a growing multifaceted hip-hop career.]
Ginuwine has always been my uncle. Growing up, when I was very, very young, I always looked up to him.
I was always at the concerts, backstage, and paying attention. Over time, you get older. My era was Chris Brown, Soulja Boy, Omarion and Bow Wow.
All of those people were hot when I was coming up. Growing up, it was Ginuwine and music producer Kevin ‘Khao’ Cates, who produced T.I.’s “Why You Wanna” song. I had all of these legends around me who inspired me to get into music because that’s all I wanted to do.
Originally I wanted to be a music producer and Khao said, ‘If you want to be a music producer, you’ve got to learn how to count your beats. You gotta be a beat counter.’
He became a deejay to learn how to beat count. So I took his word, became a deejay and then you wake up and I’m one of the hottest deejays in the world.
It was just me wanting to be in something and being at the right place at the right time with the grind.
