According to reports, Barack O’Drama will help Atlantic by discovering and signing new talent.

Based in Atlanta, he will oversee recording projects, sign new talent and contribute to the artist development process for existing talent on the Atlantic roster. In addition, DJ Drama’s newly established Means Street Studios in Atlanta will become the studio base for Atlantic artists while in the market. In a statement announcing the appointment, Atlantic chairman/CEO Craig Kallman said, “One of the most accomplished DJs and mixtape masters, DJ Drama brings brilliant instincts and consummate skills to our A&R team. A hugely influential force in the hip-hop community, I know he’ll be a tremendous asset in signing and developing artists and making amazing records.” (Billboard)

Drama has also issued a statement to confirm the new and unexpected power move.

“My first two albums as an artist were on Atlantic. And I’m now looking forward to working with Craig and Julie [Atlantic chairman/COO Greenwald] in a new capacity, helping them break the label’s next crop of amazing talent.” (Statement)

No stranger to the company’s operations, Drama released studio projects through Atlantic a few years ago.

It’s worth noting that Drama and Atlantic share some history together. The Philadelphia native released two albums under their roof: Gangsta Grillz: The Album in 2007 and its follow-up in 2009. (Complex)

Back in August 2012, Atlanta rapper T.I. spoke on fellow hip-hop artist Jeezy landing a role as Atlantic Records’ senior vice president of A&R.

“I think that’s phenomenal for Young and I’ve known about it for quite some time now. He came and spoke to me and asked me how I felt about it as far as whether or not it was a good fit for him,” Tip revealed in an interview. “And [Atlantic] came and asked me how I felt about it whether I felt that he was a good fit for the position and what not and I think it’s phenomenal.” (“The Morning Riot”)
