Disney+ released a trailer for the new original Hip-Hop Nutcracker. The trailer has a noticeably diverse cast for a hip-hop-themed movie. Most actors and extras in the trailer are from multiple races.
Disney+ has recently released a trailer for the new movie reimagining a ballet set, Hip-Hop Nutcracker. Black music figure Rev Run from the legendary rap group RUN DMC will serve as the narrator, and early rap pioneer Kurtis Blow will also be featured.
Some fans may find it hard not to notice the lack of darker-skinned actors for a hip-hop-themed movie.
One example is the main characters, actress Allison Holker Boss and Stephen Boss, who are an interracial married couple playing the roles of “Mom and Dad” to a Black daughter.
Colorism In Entertainment
As the trailer unfolds, cast members dance and enjoy the holiday season. The cast was mixed with many lighter-skinned actors and actresses from different backgrounds, such as Caucasian, Asian, and some biracial.
A possible speculation is that the film’s casting could be an example of colorism since many cast members in the movie are not Black when the hip-hop community is a predominantly Black art form. Colorism has been a debate in entertainment for decades, with one just example being comparisons between actresses Zendaya and Keke Palmer.
Meanwhile, rapper Ludacris also has an upcoming holiday movie with Disney + called Dashing Through The Snow, where various Black actors will join him.
The Hip-Hop Nutcracker is now streaming on Disney +.
