Famous movie director Quentin Tarantino helped sparked awareness to police brutality this week in New York City with a publicized demonstration.

According to reports, the peaceful protest took place Thursday (October 22) in Manhattan’s Times Square where Tarantino spoke out on people killed by police.

Tarantino honored 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was killed by Cleveland police for holding a BB gun. He went on to highlight the case of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old unarmed black man who died after being given a “nickel ride” by Baltimore police after being arrested in April. His death sparked days of protests that engulfed the city. (Raw Story)

Last week, R&B singer Usher teamed up with streaming service Tidal to release his police brutality-themed “Chains” song.

Usher released a new interactive visual experience titled Don’t Look Away, centered on his song “Chains,” featuring Nas & Bibi Bourelly. This experience is available to the public only on TIDAL at http://chains.tidal.com. “Chains” will be exclusive to TIDAL for three days and won’t be found anywhere else. Using next generation facial recognition technology and music, this debut is the first of its kind. (TIDAL Press Release)

Ush issued a statement to describe the need to pen “Chains” last week.

“In writing this song, I was motivated by the events involving prejudicial injustice that are still happening today. The reality is that racial bigotry diminishes the lives of too many people in our country. We have to come together as a country to solve these problems and this is one way I can contribute. I chose to introduce the song through the “Don’t Look Away” experience because it is important not only to feel the issue but to face it. The pain and suffering that these victims and their families have endured is something we must never forget. When we look away from this problem it gets worse. To fix it, we have to face it.” (Statement)
