According to Loon, he was set-up and is serving time on a conspiracy conviction.

“I want to explain to you, in detail, the charge that I was charged with and the federal indictment from the Eastern District of North Carolina as well as the conspiracy charge which I was charged with, conspiring to possess with intent to distribute one or more kilo of heroin. … In 2008 — some individuals had crossed my path who were interested, at one point, in the music industry. At one point, these individuals called me in relation to something totally different than the lifestlye I was living. But the fact I answered placed me under the umbrella of conspiracy and therefore, once these individuals were apprehended by the United States government, they chose to implement in the situation and tried to implement in the leadership role. … But because of the way the United States government works, they used the information of the informant and put together an elaborate story to make it look like I had a leadership role.” (AMIR MUHADITH)

Last year, the former Bad Boy Records rapper’s mother said she maintained no contact with him despite his legal woes.

“He [became] Muslim in 2007 or something like that,” Loon’s mother said in an interview. “I found out he was striving for a higher power — he didn’t have to go nowhere to become a Muslim and avoid the D.A. You can’t avoid them because there’s Muslims in jail. It wasn’t like he had to choose the Muslim faith to avoid trouble. This was a spiritual choice he made and he came back — he was great. [He’s been in custody since late November], yeah. He’s only been able to speak with] his lawyer. That’s it, that’s all. I really don’t have no direct contact for the first time in life. I don’t have no direct contact with my child.” (Vlad TV)

In fall 2011, reports emerged claiming Loon may have converted to Islam as a defense mechanism.

MediaTakeOut.com can officially report that rapper LOON was arrested – and is facing LIFE in prison. According to the feds, between 2006-2008 he was dealing HEROIN in North Carolina. The feds claim that he converted to Islam, became an Imam and moved to ALGERIA (where the US has NO extradition treaty) to avoid charges that the DEA was about to bring against him. Unfortunately for Loon, he left Algeria, and was picked up by INTERNATIONAL POLICE in Belgium. He was extradited to the United States. (Media Take Out)

In 2010, Muslim rapper Freeway offered his take on Loon’s faith.

“Last year, the middle of the year, I got a chance to visit Saudi Arabia for a second time,” he explained in an interview. “Brother Jakk Frost was with me, brother Loon, now known as Ahmir, and it just was a beautiful experience. At the time [Loon] was seven months into the religion, he was a fresh Muslim. And from that time to now, he progressed so much, he’s moving forward so quickly and I’m proud of him. The country is beautiful, the people was beautiful, the mannerism of the people. It’s just real enlightening and if any of y’all get a chance to go over there you should definitely do it.” (XXL Mag)

The rapper spoke on his departure from Diddy’s Bad Boy Records in 2009 to pursue a new faith.

“Loon is working his way out of my system,” he said in an interview. “I’m just happy to be accepting Islam and finding the peace of mind that I was always searching for in the music business and it was very difficult to find this place in my life now but thanks to Islam I’ve been able to complete my search and I’m very much at peace. Bad Boy days are over, now I’m what you would call a good boy. [laughs] Right now I’m very much focused on studying Islam…being in the position of influence, I have to be able to protect myself in ways the media sometimes tries to use these transitions that artists make and try to make an opportunity to mock Islam or whatever faith somebody might choose…With me, I very much love the music but it’s the lifestyle that’s really the bad influence. The music, sometimes, can be geared towards people to do positive things but the actual part that detours people from practicing their faith is really the lifestyle.” (Al Jazeera)
